Kittenhood

Robb continues to be a joy, with rare exceptions, like when he mistakes paper for cat litter. Here he is:

And here are Soots and Arya on New Year's Eve, having found a familiar and accommodating lap.

Soots and Arya are on fakeplasticfish.com more often than not. Robb spends his time two blocks from here, training his slow-learning humans.

And then there was one!

Best wishes for the New Year!

The amazing adventures of Soots and Arya continue here. We kept Robb because the other two were close partners in crime, always together, always egging each other on to new mischief. Robb used to be the sober and quiet one. With Soots and Arya gone, however, he's switched into full wild kitten mode. He is becoming possibly the most spoiled kitten in the world.

Meanwhile, I saw a battered black and white cat outside the house, a cat who looked more like a bulldog. If he is the father, we all may have monster cats on our hands.

Ah, well. Happy New Year!

Yeah, the boys ended up being girls, and vice versa. Guess which is which.

I had to bar them from my work room this evening. They were wild beyond belief. John and I spent quality time with them earlier, though. Arya sat in my arm and purred for at least a half an hour. She's bravely showing off her shaved tummy.

Soots sat between my legs, looking unimpressed.

Robb was sleeping in another chair. Here is an artistic, "grainy" photo of him.

Notice that Robb has a white chin on the left side, while Arya's is on the right.

There's a squirming, purring kitten on my lap right now. It's so hard to get anything done around here these days, but I managed to pack gifts and pay bills, and even tried my hand at a little art. No photos, though.

This morning, Soots got into the bedroom. He slipped in as a shadow when I was returning to the room. I didn't realize he was there until he jumped on me. He started playing instead of settling down, and the loud purr he was giving off... I'm afraid I had to banish him, at least for the time-being.

This evening, they seem happy and in good spirits. It's supposed to be around 40 degrees Fahrenheit tonight. I hope the house remains warm for them. I have blankets all over, and they have each other.

The operations were successful and not too horrific, it seems. The kittens came back raring to go. They fell upon their food as if they hadn't eaten in a week. Then they played, all except Arya, who had invasive surgery. She fell asleep on John's kitchen chair. Soots and Robb finally fell asleep on my lap. I transferred them to the chair eventually, on either side of Arya.

Hmm... the chair seems more worn each time I look at it in a photo. Funny thing.

Anyway, I went upstairs to fold some clothes. John followed and soon, everybody was in one room. The kittens played with some boxes and under the door. When it suddenly became quiet, I looked around to find this:

I'm glad they are comfortable and sleeping.

We have to take Arya back in a week to get sutures removed. No more trauma for the boys, it seems.

The cats are a little nervous, perhaps because we have a car and they remember what happened the last time a car was in the picture, perhaps because I pulled their food at 10 p.m. -- or perhaps they are picking it up from me and John. Anyway, I am going to make myself scarce tomorrow morning. Poor John has the most work to do to get the kittens to the vet.

I got a number of things done this weekend. It is hard to work on projects when cats want to play. Arya has been jumping up on me, trying to climb my legs or perch on my shoulder. It's not the most comfortable thing. She gets excited easily, same as Soots.

Hope all is OK tomorrow.

I found out the meaning of "cats paw" today, as two kittens were on the stairs reaching through the bars while the kitten in my arms had its paw put forward as a lure (which paw was never touched by the others). They like to play "attack the human through the bars." Arya, in fact, is a little too eager to attack the human at any time. She is the roughest player.

I've also been singing a song written by our adopting friend for karaoke, "Kittens of Oakland," to the tune of "Werewolves of London." I'd reproduce it here, but it has real names and, except for John and the kittens, I am trying to avoid reality.

I've had the windows open so they can look out. They'd rather play with the pull to the blinds. They do like the sun, even though they are black cats. Soots is so black, it's hard to see him in the general darkness of this house. With the blinds open, the house looks much better!

We also cleaned, which was comical, as the kittens didn't know what to make of a mop and water. They were pretty sure they didn't like them in action.

Finally, the litter box upstairs with the clay litter is seeing much more use than the one downstairs with the recyclable and flushable corn husk substance. They still eat the clay litter, even though it's soiled. Loony.

Soots and Arya are tearing each other up, along with anything that falls into their path. I wonder if some warm formula would calm them down, not that they really need to be calm. Still, warm formula...hmmm.

We got the word today that they are ready to be neutered. Monday is the day of doom, then a few days of recovery.

Meanwhile, here are a few pictures from this weekend.

Soots and Arya:

Notice Soots' tiny eyes compared to the others. His legs seem longer, though.

Robb:

It's raining outside, but the kittens haven't a care.

Today I came home to a quiet house, even after several shout-outs. I went upstairs to find that the three kittens had knocked the door stop out from under the door, which had then closed to seal them in the upstairs bathroom (which is why we have a door stop). They might have been in there all day. They managed to pull the towels down so they could sleep in comfort on the floor. That was dismal comfort, however, on a cold tile floor. Still, they were happy to see me, and gobbled down all the food I gave them on the spot.

I put a second litter box in the upstairs bathroom this evening. Our friends obtained a box, but I ended up getting a roasting pan, since it is only a temporary measure. I've been buying cat litter made out of corn or something, but the animal shelter gave us two bags of cat litter made of clay, so I put that in the upstairs box. Of course, all three of them started eating it, as if it was a huge bowl of kibble. I guess they'll learn in time.

Sorry, no pictures. The evenings seem to be so short, now, and there are so many things to do. It's hard to get any of them done when kittens follow my every move -- not that I'm complaining.

Three kittens were at the top of the stairs this morning, but I was wise to them and had the lights on as soon as I stepped out of the bedroom.

I took a tack out of Soots' mouth tonight. I think he knocked it off a bulletin board. If they survive kittenhood, I'll be greatly relieved.

Arya sat in my lap for an hour. We took a few photos -- she was so cute. She's been with me all evening. The three of them followed every step I took this morning. I don't think I'll ever understand them.

Today started off with me going down the dark stairs, where lurked two kittens fast asleep on the first step under the landing. Naturally, my foot slipped while stepping on them and I nearly fell down the stairs. No-one was hurt -- they are remarkably sleek -- but lesson learned: constant vigilance!

They have been trying to get into the bedroom, rather insistently. Perhaps they want to be close to us. Perhaps they want to be warm. Either way, it isn't happening.

Soots and Arya are quite the pair of juvenile delinquents. They hang out together all the time and play rough, encouraging each other to new heights (literally). Robb is more sedate and dignified.

No time, so no pictures. Maybe tomorrow.

I slept most of the day, and so did the kittens. They are inhaling the food now, and still loving formula. I have some film of them playing from yesterday, and pictures of them sleeping from today, but I am too ill to fool around with them to make them web-ready. So... all is well!

Arya and Soots stayed together most of the day, twin troublemakers, while Robb kept to himself and slept. He stayed with me upstairs while I worked on the computer. He's quite the lover kitten.

Here Arya and Soots have discovered that the blinds in the living room are open.

Soots and Arya spent some time sleeping in John's room, on his black sweater.

I'm glad they've been more-or-less quiet today, as I'm still getting over a cold. I should really be in bed now.

We had a little drama in the form of a call from our alarm company (the alarm system came with the house, and we decided to keep it active) this afternoon. Fueled by my visions of clueless kitties set loose in the world, John rushed home, but all was well.

It's fairly cold outside, and even with the furnace on, the house is chilly downstairs. The kittens found a new chair to sleep on, in the living room. I wrapped the sleeping kittens up in a blanket. They are less active than they would normally be, and I plan to be the same.

You never know with them. Yesterday evening and this morning, they were tearing around the house and jumping on tables. I was afraid to leave them alone, worried about what they would get into. Tonight, however, they couldn't wait to climb into our laps and fall asleep purring! Maybe it's because it's getting fairly cold outside and they can feel it near to the floor as they are. Maybe it was because we sat down to watch a film about New York No Wave, and faced with a novel barrage of sounds, the kittens decided to zone out instead.

Yep, pretty special kitties.

[Nov. 28th, 2007|11:00 pm]

We are feeding the kittens twice a day now, which meant great exultation and chaos when we got home this evening. They grow by leaps and bounds, sometimes frighteningly so. I was watching Soots climb up near the top of the stove after we had cooked the human meal, alarmed because the stovetop was hot, and when I sat down... Robb was underneath me on the chair which no cat had never climbed before! I have learned to watch my feet. Now I will have to watch all around me. I'm just a lot bigger than they are.

But all is well, and they set off to play for a couple of hours. I just hope they don't get into trouble while we aren't home.
